Jack Dorsey Exits Bluesky

Jack Dorsey is no longer on Bluesky’s board.

Dorsey’s exit was not public knowledge until Saturday.

Reports say that Jack Dorsey had  posted on X about Start Small , his philanthropic  initiative. The post prompted an X user to ask Dorsey if he was still on the Bluesky board.

 Dorsey  responded with a  simple  “no”, ignoring  follow-up posts asking him to explain his departure.

Bluesky confirmed Dorsey’s exit in a  published statement  on the app, a day later.

Thanking Dorsey while confirming his exit, the statement also announced the search for a new board member;

“We sincerely thank Jack for his help funding and initiating the bluesky project. Today, Bluesky is thriving as an open source social network running on atproto, the decentralized protocol we have built.”

“With Jack’s departure, we are searching for a new board member for the Bluesky public benefit company who shares our commitment to building a social network that puts people in control of their experience. More to come! “

There have not been any official statements from Bluesky about Dorsey’s departure before this conversation and it remains unclear when and why Dorsey left the board.

Sources confirmed that Dorsey had deleted his Bluesky account sometime last year.

 Dorsey first announced Bluesky in 2019,  when he was still CEO of Twitter. as a project to develop an open-source social media standard that he wanted Twitter to move to.

 He wrote that Twitter (now X) was “funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media.”

Dorsey joined bluesky’s  board of directors in 2022 after  it split from Twitter.

 Bluesky has  been an independent public benefit corporation, led by CEO Jay Graber, with VC backing.

The social media platform  opened to the general public in February.

Bluesky has two board members remaining ; CEO, Jay Graeber, and Jabber / XMPP inventor Jeremie Miller.

Jack Dorsey however  remains the biggest name associated with the project as its foremost champion and initiator.
