Trying to recreate the atmospheric gardens seen on social media can be overwhelming without a clear strategy.

From expensive decor to furniture that doesn’t fit, time and money can be wasted by not considering how to make the most of the space.

Crystal Olenbush is a luxury home marketing specialist and real estate expert at AustinRealEstate.com.

Through her work, she is “constantly” researching the latest materials, fixtures, and plants that homeowners use to create “lush, functional oases.”

She told The U.S. Sun that outdoor living is her “personal passion” and she always has new strategies.

PERFECT PLAN

Olenbush said the first step for revamping any backyard is envisioning how the space will be used.

“Will you be hosting friends for dinner?” she said.

“Lounging with a good book? Planting a vegetable garden?

“Thinking about your needs and lifestyle is important as you make design decisions.

“Once you know how you’ll spend time outside, it’s time to start planning.

“But above all a clear objective has to be set, so think of your whereabouts, the predominant weather, the friends you have, and the activities you’d like to take part in that particular space.”

SITTING PRETTY

The real estate expert said outdoor furniture should be able to serve multiple purposes.

Meanwhile, lighting should be decorative but also practical for using the space at night.

“An ottoman with extra storage or a bench with built-in planters are neat ways to maximize functionality in a small area,” she said.

“Don’t forget about lighting, too – string lights, solar lanterns, and outdoor sconces can beautifully illuminate your space at night.”

Get creative with vertical gardens on walls or fences if space is tight.

Outdoor string lights suitable for backyards, patios, and balconies are available for $16.99 at Walmart.

A waterproof outdoor hanging solar lantern is also sold at the store for $23.99.

GREEN PARADISE

Olenbush revealed that it’s possible to embrace surrounding nature and have flourishing greenery even in the smallest gardens.

“No outdoor oasis is complete without plants,” she said.

“Get creative with vertical gardens on walls or fences if space is tight.

“Herbs are wonderfully fragrant and low-maintenance.

“I also suggest considering a water feature like a birdbath – the subtle sounds of trickling water create such a serene environment.

How to make your backyard a little paradise

Houna Bech is an interior designer and founder of the style blog With Houna.

She revealed to The U.S. Sun five tips for transforming a drab outdoor space into a “sensory-rich little paradise.”

  1. Embrace nature

“Use your landscaping, trees, flowers, and organic environment as your muse,” she said.

2. Bring the inside out

“Repeat color palettes, textures, and materials so the transition between indoors and out is seamless,” she said.

3. Create zones for specific purposes

“I might design a luxurious cabana with plush loungers and vanities for alfresco makeup sessions with my girlfriends,” she said.

4. Prioritize comfort

“I’m talking cloud-like sectionals, upholstered daybeds, and oversized weather-resistant poufs you can really envelop yourself in,” she said.

5. Get creative

“Finally, turn your entire outdoor area into an artistic installation,” Bech said.

“Once the basics are in place, it’s time for styling.

“Outdoor rugs, throw pillows and cozy blankets invite relaxation.

“Screens or heavy curtains provide privacy when needed. Decorating with personal treasures makes the space feel truly yours.”

A vertical garden planter ideal for balconies costs $79.99 at Walmart.

The store also sells a birdbath for $18.30.

INSTA INSPO

“For design inspiration, I love browsing online,” Olenbush said.

“Pinterest and YouTube are goldmines of ideas tailored to any style.

“The key is envisioning how you want guests to feel when they visit your little escape.

“With some planning, even the smallest patio can feel like a lush retreat.”
