“I’m in Hospital Because of Two Term”: Single Mother of Four Suffers Political Attack in Kibra

A family in Kibra’s Gatwikira area is calling for justice after a relative suffered an alleged attack tied to her political views.

Maureen Matsili, a single mother of four, allegedly faced assault and burns on May 18 from someone she knew, after she repeatedly chanted the “two-term” slogan in the area.

While many other parts of Kenya saw protests, with public service vehicles grounded and youths clashing with police over fuel prices, Kibra Constituency stayed largely calm, and most residents avoided the demonstrations.

Despite the relative calm, Matsili says the attack destroyed her life, and she links it to her continued support for the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“Mimi naumia kwa sababu ya two term; niko hapa hospitali kwa sababu ya two term,” she said.

The family alleges that the attacker poured boiling beans on Maureen, leaving her with serious injuries.

“Sasa yule akamwambia watu wamegoma magari, watu wamegoma kwa barabara na wewe unatuletea mambo ya two term. Akaenda kwa kibanda ya mtu akachukua maharagwe moto akamumwagilia,” Maureen’s sister Lilian Kakuli narrated.

The family reported the incident to Kibra Police Station, and they say the suspect, someone well known in the area, has not yet been arrested. They also called for faster investigations.

“Maureen ameumia kutoka kwa matiti, kitovu, private parts zake na kwa mapaja, alafu daktari anasema hapo kwa kitovu ndio moto iliingia sana,” Lilian added.

Maureen’s brother Franklin Matsili said the government should take such cases seriously, especially when the injuries appear severe.

“Kama mtu anaweza chomwa hivyo na hana makosa, serikali iangalie vitu kama hizo. Maureen amechomeka vibaya sana. Kusema ukweli kama mimi ndugu yake ni kama hiyo uchungu naskia,” Franklin said.

Maureen’s friend, Alice Ayuma, appealed to the government to intervene, saying the situation must end because more innocent people could get hurt if it continues.

Patricia Yegon confirmed that detectives are investigating the case, which Maureen’s sister reported, and she said the victim is currently admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

She added that police in Kibra are treating the matter as a suspected hate crime, even as the family continues to demand the arrest of the suspect.

Detectives are also expected to record statements from several witnesses as part of the investigation.

The incident has sparked fears following a recent rise in politically linked violence cases.

The attack against Maureen occurred on the same day goons in Githurai 45 reportedly torched a vehicle belonging to Priscilla Njiraini after they allegedly found a UDA sachet inside the car.
