We’ve been married for a little over a year, but my husband lives in his parents’ house, and I also live in my parents’ house. That wasn’t the plan when we started talking about marriage. My husband was living in his own place, but the rent was almost due, so we agreed we would get a bigger place instead and move in right after marriage.

Right after our wedding, we got a new place and paid for it. The landlord told us he was going to fix the fittings and do some minor plumbing work so we could move in within a few weeks. We both agreed and used the money we received as gifts during our wedding to make a half payment for the rent.

A week later, my husband called to tell me the landlord said he was short of money and would be happy if we paid the rest of the rent. I sent him half of the money, and later in the evening, he said he had gone to pay. Weeks passed, but whenever I asked my husband about the progress of the apartment, he gave me excuses. I was surprised he accepted such excuses from the landlord. I kept asking him, “Don’t you think this landlord is just messing around with us?”

He responded, “Let’s give him some time so he doesn’t do a shoddy job for us.” One afternoon, I passed by the place to see the progress for myself, and to my surprise, there were new tenants in the building. I asked the landlord why, and he said, “I thought you guys said you’d changed your mind, so I gave it to other people so I could refund your payment.”

Unbeknownst to me, a few days after I visited the place, my husband went back to tell the landlord that we wanted a refund. The landlord gave him back the money even before he came to tell me that the landlord was asking for the rest of the money.

I went to see him at his parents’ house, and he told me, “I needed the money for something important, so I had to use it.” To date, I don’t know what that important thing was. He said I should give him only a month and he would raise more money to rent a new place. When the month was up and I asked about it, he told me, “Is where we are going to rent better than my father’s house? Just stop talking and move in with me.”

I felt stupid. I felt betrayed and used. That was the plan all along, and he still went ahead to collect money from me. The most annoying part is what his father told me. He said, “A wife stays where her husband is. Because he has used your money, you won’t live with him again? Will we eat you if you come to live here?”

I’ve given myself another year, and that will make it two years since we got married. I will sue him for my money and later file for a divorce due to irreconcilable differences. When a man lies and later tries to gaslight and manipulate you to accept his lies, yes, it’s irreconcilable.
