Comedian Kenny Blaq has recently discussed his role in the music comedy scene in Nigeria, clarifying his position within the genre. In an interview with Hip TV, Kenny Blaq acknowledged that while he did not originate music comedy in Nigeria, he credited earlier pioneers like Gbenga Adeboye, CD John, and others for laying the foundation. He emphasized that his distinctive style, influenced by modern artists such as Wizkid and Davido, sets him apart from his predecessors. His innovative approach, including experimenting with various genres, mashups, and storytelling, has contributed to his unique position in the genre.

Kenny Blaq expressed that despite not being the originator of music comedy, his work has played a significant role in popularizing and strengthening the genre in Nigeria.

He explained:

“Because of my approach to music comedy, some people assume that I introduced the genre to Nigeria. They might think I started music comedy as a genre.

“But there were earlier music comedians like the late Gbenga Adeboye, Fung Otong, MC Miracle, Maleke, and late CD John. What made my style different was my incorporation of the Wizkid and Davido vibe into it. I explored various genres with my comedy.

“Previous music comedians often focused on specific styles or languages, such as Igbo or Yoruba music. I introduced mashups, covers, and storytelling, and maintained consistency in my approach.

“I did not start music comedy, but I can proudly say that I have significantly contributed to its growth and strength in this region.”
