The head of the Ijaw nation, Edwin Clark, has written to President Bola Tinubu pleading for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to be freed.

Kanu’s desire to cooperate with the government to establish peace and stability in the South-East was one of Clark’s main arguments for the President to order Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi to file a nolle prosequi (removal of charges) in order to liberate Kanu.

In a previous letter, which was reported by Punch on Sunday, Clark reportedly warned Tinubu against marginalising the Igbo people, as his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, was purported to have done.

He claimed that Kanu’s release would bring about the final peace in Nigeria and put a stop to the sit-at-home directive in the Southeast.

The Federal High Court rejected bail in April for the IPOB leader, who has been in custody since 2021.

According to Clark, using the “carrot and stick approach” rather than military force would be more successful in quelling regional agitations.

He pointed out that because of the South-East’s historical marginalisation, IPOB has acquired support among young people in the area.

He claimed that while attending a gathering in Awka, Anambra State, he had a close encounter with IPOB militants.

He said, “The shortchanging of the Igbos of the South-East over the years is the reason why IPOB has fashioned a place for itself in the hearts and minds of the young people in the South-East with its demand for self-determination.
