“We were both capable British-trained officers. However, by 1966, I had the edge in breadth and seniority of formal military training, which aligned with my role as a career staff officer before I became Head of State.

By the grace of God, I assumed leadership at the age of 31, while he was 32.
Ojukwu viewed my appointment with suspicion, believing it was influenced by Western powers—he reportedly dismissed me as a young, inexperienced figure propped up externally.

As Military Governor of the Eastern Region, he personally vowed never to accept being ruled by me or remain under federal authority, ultimately leading him to declare the secession of Biafra and divide Nigeria.
That was how the tragic conflict began.

Today, I forgive him wherever he may be, because Nigeria was created to succeed as one united nation, not through division.
