How to share a grocery list on iPhone, Android, and Pixel

Learn how to share a grocery list on iPhone, Samsung and Pixel using Google Keep, or Apple Notes when everyone uses Apple devices.

 CyberGuy Daily Tech Tip

Ever send someone a grocery list, only to remember three more things after they’ve already left for the store?

Or maybe you both end up buying milk because neither person knows the other already picked it up.

There’s a much easier way to handle grocery shopping.

You can share a grocery list that everyone in your household can update from their own phone.

If your family uses a mix of iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixels, Google Keep is a convenient option. And if everyone uses Apple devices, the built-in Notes app can do the job, too.

Here’s how to set it up.

How to share a grocery list using Google Keep on iPhone

Google Keep lets you create a shared checklist that updates for everyone with access.

  1. Download or open the Google Keep app on your iPhone.
  2. Sign in with your Google account.
  3. Create a new list using the checkbox option.
  4. Give your list a name, such as Groceries.
  5. Add items such as milk, eggs and bread.
  6. Open the list and tap the three-dot menu.
  7. Select Collaborator or Collaborators.
  8. Enter the other person’s Google account email address.
  9. Save your changes.

The other person can open the list in Google Keep and start making updates.

Bonus tip: When someone checks off an item, the change syncs so everyone can see what’s already been purchased.

How to share a grocery list using Google Keep on Samsung Galaxy

Samsung Galaxy users can create the same shared checklist.

  1. Open Google Keep or download it if necessary.
  2. Sign in to your Google account.
  3. Tap the option to create a new list.
  4. Name it Grocery List.
  5. Add the items you need.
  6. Open the three-dot menu.
  7. Select Collaborators.
  8. Add the email address associated with the other person’s Google account.
  9. Save the list.

Now both people can add, edit or check off items.

Quick tip: Keep the list available for regular shopping trips instead of creating a new one every week.

How to share a grocery list using Google Keep on Google Pixel

Google Pixel users can also share grocery lists through Google Keep.

  1. Open the Google Keep app.
  2. Create a new checklist.
  3. Name it Groceries.
  4. Add your shopping items.
  5. Open the three-dot menu.
  6. Tap Collaborators.
  7. Enter the other person’s Google account email address.
  8. Save your changes.

Everyone added to the list can update it from their own device.

Bonus tip: You can use Google Keep for other shared lists, including vacation packing, household supplies or party planning.

How to share a grocery list using Apple Notes on iPhone

If everyone in your household uses iPhones or other compatible Apple devices, you may prefer Apple’s built-in Notes app.

Apple Notes supports shared checklists through iCloud.

  1. Open Notes on your iPhone.
  2. Make sure you’re using iCloud Notes, not a note stored only on your device.
  3. Create a new note.
  4. Give it a title, such as Grocery List.
  5. Tap the checklist button to start adding items.
  6. Tap the Share button.
  7. Choose Collaborate rather than Send Copy.
  8. Make sure the sharing permissions allow the other person to make changes.
  9. Send the invitation using Messages, Mail or another available method.
  10. Have the other person accept the invitation.

Now both people can add items or check them off.

Important: Apple Notes collaboration requires compatible Apple devices and Apple accounts with iCloud Notes enabled. It isn’t the best choice for households mixing iPhones and Android phones.

For mixed-device households, Google Keep is generally the simpler option.

Tips for keeping a shared grocery list organized

A shared list works best when everyone uses it consistently.

  • Keep one main list: Avoid creating several versions of the same grocery list.
  • Check items off at the store: That helps prevent duplicate purchases.
  • Add items immediately: If you finish the milk, put it on the list before you forget.
  • Use clear descriptions: Write “whole milk” instead of just “milk” if that matters.
  • Review the list before shopping: Make sure old checked-off items aren’t accidentally included in your next trip.

Important things to know

Google Keep requires each collaborator to have a Google account. Everyone also needs an internet connection for changes to sync between devices.

Apple Notes collaboration works through iCloud and requires appropriate sharing permissions.

Both options allow collaborators to edit the list, so only share it with people you trust.

If someone is shopping somewhere without reliable internet access, they may not immediately see the latest changes.
