There’s nothing quite like the start of fall—cozy sweaters, trendy boots, and pumpkin-flavored everything. But if you live in a place where September still feels like summer (*raises hand), dressing for the season without breaking into a sweat can feel impossible. I don’t know about you, but come this time of year, I’m ready to kiss my summer wardrobe goodbye and lean into autumn’s cozy vibes. But unfortunately, the idea of layering knits when it’s still in the 80s outside just isn’t realistic for all of us.

The good news? You don’t have to wait for the temps to drop to start channeling fall. With a few strategic swaps and key pieces, you can give your outfits the seasonal upgrade you’re craving without overheating before you finish your PSL.

Here are six easy ways you can dress for the fall season even if the weather hasn’t gotten the memo yet.

1. Embrace a Fall Color Palette

Even if the temperatures are screaming summer, your color palette can say fall. Think deep burgundy, chocolate brown, dark green, camel, and burnt orange. Wearing these shades will instantly make your outfit feel more autumnal, even if you’re wearing summer silhouettes like tank tops, mini dresses, or lightweight blouses.

2. Dress in Light Layers

We’ve officially reached the time of year where it’s chilly in the morning and sweltering by noon, so instead of chunky sweaters and heavy coats, reach for breathable layers you can take on and off throughout the day. A lightweight jacket, button down, or vest added to your outfit gives a nod to fall without trapping in too much heat. Even simply draping a sweater over your shoulders can transition your outfit while keeping you cool.

3. Swap Sandals for Closed-Toe Shoes

Changing up your footwear is one of the easiest ways to transition your look into the next season. Trade in your strappy sandals for loafers, clogs, or ballet flats to make any outfit look more autumnal. Pro tip: look for velvet, leather, or suede options to really embrace the season.

4. Change Up Your Accessories

If you’re not quite ready to give up your summer wardrobe staples, accessories are where you can lean into the fall aesthetic. Swap out your straw bags and sandals for more fall-forward options like structured handbags, bold statement jewelry, or a printed silk scarf. Bonus points if they’re in moody fall colors.

5. Add a pair of tights

Believe it or not, a thin or sheer pair of tights aren’t as heavy as you may think. To me, a pair of tights and a skirt have always given the ultimate Rachel Green fall vibes. Along with a lightweight sweater and some loafers, this outfit combo is essential.

6. Introduce Fall Textures

It may not be time to pull out your favorite Rory Gilmore-inspired sweater quite yet, but you can still incorporate fall textures into your wardrobe. Instead of breezy linen and gauzy fabrics, opt for lightweight ribbed knits, faux leather, or suede. Pairing a chocolate brown ribbed tank with jeans or a suede mini skirt with a short sleeve tee can give you that fall vibe you’re looking for while keeping things breathable and weather appropriate.
