If you take the time to understand how singing works, it becomes a lot easier to understand why certain things you do help your singing, and others make it worse.

So the most basic step to learning how to sing for beginners, is understanding the basics of how your body produces vocal sounds, and singing. This diagram marks some of the most important parts in the body for singing.

Learn how to sing for beginners: Understanding Your Vocal Apparatus

Vocal sound is created when air comes up from the lungs through the trachea.

It passes through the larynx, where the vocal cords are located. The vocal cords are controlled by you, either consciously or subconsciously.

The diameter of the vocal cords as air passes through them, controls the pitch of the sound that is produced.

Resonance (vibrations) within the mouth, nasal cavity, throat and lungs affect the tone and volume of the sound that you produce.

As does how open or closed your mouth is as you sing, more on that later.

So, essentially, learning how to sing is a process of:

Controlling your breath

Widening and contracting your vocal cords at will

Using your body cavities and mouth the right way to manipulate tone and increase volume

This may sound relatively simple, but the fine tuning of this process to go from simply making sound, to having an incredible singing voice, takes a lot of practice.
