“Hold FG Responsible For Impending Strike” – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged Nigerians to hold the Federal Government responsible for the looming paralysis in the country’s public universities.

The call was made on Monday, by the ASUU Benin Zone during a press conference at Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, Delta State.

Speaking at the briefing, the Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Monday Igbafen, said lecturers have been pushed to the wall due to the Federal Government’s failure to honour agreements reached since the suspension of the last strike in October 2022.

“We want to tell Nigerians not to hold ASUU responsible, but hold the Federal Government responsible for the paralysis that will soon cripple Nigerian universities,” Igbafen declared.

He lamented that university scholars remain the most marginalized group in the country despite their role in nation-building.

Highlighting the issues, he said: “The government has failed to sign the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, refused to pay withheld salaries, and continues to pay lip service to proper funding of education.”

ASUU further expressed displeasure that while the cost of living continues to rise, lecturers have been stuck on the same poor salary structure for over 16 years.

“It is unimaginable that lecturers, abandoned to an abysmally poor salary system, are expected to function effectively while government officials send their children abroad for schooling,” Igbafen added.

The union called on students, parents, civil society organisations, and labour unions to intervene and pressure the government to avert another shutdown of universities.

ASUU stressed that strike action is always a last resort, noting that members are not happy with the idea but have exhausted all available options.
