Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Charles Hinga on Thursday handed over a set of key social amenities at the New Boma Yangu Mukuru Housing Estate, marking a major milestone as the government prepares for the second phase handover of 5,000 newly completed affordable housing units.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, PS Hinga emphasized that the programme’s focus extends beyond housing construction to ensuring residents enjoy a complete and convenient living environment.

“The facilities here including schools, healthcare facilities, retail spaces, and the police post are designed to make the estate a fully self-sufficient, thriving community and improve the quality of life for its residents,” he said.

The amenities unveiled include a fully equipped ECDE and daycare centre, a strip mall to support local businesses such as cybercafés, eateries, coffee shops and clothing stores, an outpatient dispensary for accessible healthcare, and an in-house police post with an attached fire station to enhance emergency response.

These facilities aim to create a cohesive and self-sustaining community where residents can live, work and access essential services without leaving the neighbourhood, a key factor expected to boost local economic empowerment.

Interior PS Raymond Omollo, who joined the handover ceremony, praised the strategic placement of the police post inside the estate, noting its importance for a development of this scale.

“We will ensure the police post here is adequately manned, and in conjunction with the State Department for Housing, we are working to ensure we set up CCTV coverage across the estate as well as work with local leaders to ensure the highest standards of security are achieved,” he stated.

Recruitment and enumeration for the 5,000 new studio units that will soon be handed over is currently underway, paving the way for thousands of new homeowners to join the growing Mukuru community.

The Boma Yangu Mukuru development forms part of the government’s affordable housing rollout across 111 constituencies, targeting Kenyans from all socioeconomic backgrounds and aiming to deliver decent, accessible, and dignified living spaces.

Nairobi Deputy Governor James Njoroge echoed these sentiments, saying:

“This initiative sets a new standard for urban living in Kenya: a neighbourhood where residents are not just tenants but active participants in a thriving, cohesive, and empowered community.”
