Government meets CETAG today to address strike

In a bid to end several weeks of industrial action by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association Ghana (CETAG), the Ministry of Labour and Employment Relations (MLER) has invited the leaders of the aggrieved group for a crucial meeting today, Monday, August 19.

Other officials from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) are expected at the critical meeting.

CETAG has been on a two-month strike, which began on June 14, over the government’s failure to implement the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and some negotiated service conditions.

Speaking to the media following his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee on Friday, August 2, the Minister of Labour and Employment Relations Baffour Awuah confirmed that all outstanding issues had been fully resolved and CETAG members were expected back to their posts.

Mr. Baffour Awuah assured that the ministry had implemented measures to prevent any further industrial action before the end of the year.

He acknowledged that while financial considerations are a factor, delays were due to necessary audits and verification processes.

However, CETAG has refused to end the strike.

The latest move to address concerns by the group is to prevent further disruption to the academic calendar and any other potential adverse effects.
