In a light-hearted yet pointed political overture, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State openly urged his counterpart, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during a public event in Yola on Monday.

The moment unfolded at the launch of a book titled Fintiri: The Man They Could Not Stop, where Governor Sule, who served as chairman of the occasion, praised Fintiri’s leadership style and described him as a “progressive governor” aligned with APC ideals.

“You have the APC in your DNA. We’re on the same page with you,” Sule declared, drawing laughter from the audience. In a symbolic and humorous gesture, he added: “I have brought a Tinubu’s infinity cap in case you’re thinking of joining the APC.”

The remark referenced the signature red cap associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, often worn by APC supporters and leaders as a symbol of loyalty to the party and its national leader.

Sule’s comments were part of broader efforts to highlight shared governance philosophies between the two governors, despite Fintiri remaining a prominent figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Adamawa State has traditionally been a PDP stronghold, and Fintiri has maintained strong ties to the party.

The playful recruitment attempt did not go unchallenged. Former Senate President Bukola Saraki, also present at the event, responded indirectly by suggesting that the APC should focus on improving its own performance rather than seeking talent from the PDP.

Saraki reportedly remarked that if the APC were truly delivering results, it would not need to “recruit” from opposition territories, and he quipped that Sule might return home with the caps unused.

Neither Governor Fintiri nor his administration has indicated any immediate intention to switch parties. Adamawa officials have previously dismissed speculation about Fintiri defecting to the APC, reaffirming his commitment to the PDP.

The incident underscores the fluid and often theatrical nature of Nigerian politics, where personal relationships, public jests, and strategic overtures frequently intersect. Governor Sule’s visit to Yola highlights continued cross-party interactions among Nigeria’s governors, even amid partisan differences.
