Gov Adeleke Resigns from PDP, Cites Internal Crisis

By Tgnews Reporter

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has officially resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a deepening leadership crisis within the party at the national level. The announcement, made public late Monday via a post on X, marks a significant political shift as the state prepares for the 2026 gubernatorial election, with the PDP’s primary scheduled for today, December 2, 2025.

In a letter dated November 4, 2025, addressed to the PDP Ward 2 Chairman in Sagba Abogunde, Ede North Local Government, Governor Adeleke formally tendered his resignation.

Adeleke expressed gratitude to the PDP for providing the platform that enabled his political journey from Senator to Governor. However, he cited the ongoing turmoil within the party’s national leadership as the primary reason for his exit.

The resignation comes at a critical juncture for the PDP, which has been grappling with internal factionalism that has led to the expulsion of key figures and rival conventions. The crisis intensified following a clash between factions led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, resulting in violent confrontations at the party’s national secretariat in November.

This turmoil has prompted defections by several PDP governors, with Adeleke becoming the fifth to leave the party in 2025, according to reports from Legit.ng.

The timing of Adeleke’s resignation, just one day before the Osun PDP gubernatorial primary, has raised eyebrows. As the sole compliant aspirant who had completed all nomination processes, his departure leaves the party without a clear candidate for the upcoming election.

As Governor Adeleke remains in office until the 2026 election, his next political affiliation and its impact on Osun State’s political landscape will be closely watched. The resignation underscores the broader challenges facing Nigeria’s main opposition party, with many viewing it as a step toward a potential one-party dominance by the APC, a concern echoed by figures like Governor Makinde during recent factional disputes.
