God Moved in Mysterious Ways to Show My Best Friends Fighting Over My Boyfriend

My favorite hymn is in MHB 503. The first stanza says,

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.

This hymn became my favorite because it summed up what I went through in 2024. Adwoa was a friend I grew up with. We lived in the same area when we were kids, and we still live in the same area. Along the line, Adwoa introduced Mina into our friendship, and she became part of us. We were the three musketeers; if you offended one, you offended us all.

We went to battles for each other. We inherited each other’s enemies and bonded over conversations about our victories as friends. I started dating David before he traveled abroad. I loved him and decided to wait for him no matter what. So when Adwoa and Mina were chilling in love, I stayed lonely, committed to a relationship that existed online and in the air.

Adwoa advised me not to put all my eggs in one basket. “Do you know what he’s doing there with other women? And you’re here staying loyal?” I answered, “As far as my eyes don’t see it, I’m fine.” Mina called me the best girlfriend of the century. “You’re the only woman alive who is waiting for a boyfriend who may never come.”

I took all that in good faith, waiting for David to come so we could prove them wrong. At some point, David started asking me questions about things I never thought he would know. He knew the places I went and asked questions about them. He knew the men coming into my life to propose and asked why I was still talking to them if I didn’t accept their proposals.

It felt strange, but none of my friends had his contact, so I asked myself, “Then who could be telling this guy stories about me?” He later told me he’d set spies on me, and they watched my every step. I believed him, so I became very watchful of the places I went and who I talked to. I told my friends everything David told me, and they even said it was someone from my house who was giving David information.

David was away for two years. Within these two years, my friends kept many relationships while I stayed lonely. When David returned, it was a fanfare in town. Finally, what was mine was close to me. What was love that we didn’t celebrate? What was fun that we didn’t have? What was sex that we didn’t have?

He was going to stay for only a month, so I decided to take him all in and build beautiful memories before he left. Then Mina and Adwoa started having issues with each other. Neither of them could tell me about it, but they always fought around me. Mina would say, “It’s fine,” but wouldn’t talk to Adwoa. Adwoa would say she wasn’t fighting with Mina but would stay away from her.

One afternoon, I went to see Adwoa and met her throwing punches with Mina. They were physically fighting, removing wigs and biting each other. Men were there but couldn’t separate the fight. I kept screaming, “What has come over you? Stop it. You girls should stop.”

It felt like my voice was gasoline to a fire. The more I screamed, the more the fight continued. When they finally separated, they started insulting each other and accusing each other of things that happened in the dark.

Why were they fighting? Let me tell you.

So, Adwoa was sleeping with David. David was sleeping with Mina and also with me. Mina was the one giving David all the information he said a spy was giving him. She was trying hard to destroy our relationship even before David came back. Adwoa was also talking to David on the side, doing video calls and sending nudes. David was busy enjoying my friends and also enjoying me.

Mina suspected Adwoa was having an affair with David, so she took David’s phone, and that was when she saw the nudes. But the fight that day started because Mina went to tell Adwoa to stay off David, or else she would tell me everything that was going on. Not knowing this, Adwoa also knew Mina was in the picture with David, so the fight started. Mina was cheating with my boyfriend and yet had the audacity to be jealous because my boyfriend was cheating on me and her with Adwoa.

They confessed while they fought, forgetting I was there watching them. According to those there, David was also around when the fight started, but he ran away. I was so shocked I wanted to cry, but when I opened my mouth, it was laughter that came out. I kept screaming, “What? Am I dreaming or what?”

When they finally kept quiet and saw me standing and watching them, they parted shamefully without saying a word to me. I called Mina, but she didn’t look back. Adwoa entered her room, and I was left standing there. The only thing that came to my head was this hymn: “God moves in mysterious ways.”

If it wasn’t mystery that led me to the truth, then what pushed me to Adwoa’s house in the first place? I went to buy my favorite street food, but the woman hadn’t finished setting up, so I decided to go to Adwoa’s and while away time since she lived closer. All the time they were telling me David was cheating abroad, I believed them, but I prayed and said to God, “Show me if that’s true. You know I’m being faithful. If he’s not and he’s only wasting my time, please show me a sign.”

When I went to Adwoa’s room to ask questions, she told me she was not ready to talk and even went as far as telling me she didn’t owe me any explanation, so I should talk to my David. When I walked out of her room, the fifth stanza of the hymn entered my head:

His purposes will ripen fast
Unfolding every hour
The bud may have a bitter taste
But sweet will be the flower

See how His purpose unfolded before my very eyes, telling me the enemy wasn’t the snake in the forest but the sheep I dined with. What I saw left a bitter taste in my mouth, but guess what? It was meant for my good, so it tasted sweet afterward.

David was supposed to leave the country in a week’s time, but he disappeared that very day, and I didn’t see him again until he left the country. The only explanation he gave me was, “Were you also not cheating when I was away? Who didn’t know?”

I lost my best friends and lost my boyfriend. I was back to being alone, but it was worth it. Who needs friends if these two could be called friends?
