By the 2000s, General Motors' former Australian arm, Holden, had earned a reputation for building powerful, rear-drive machines with V8 engines based on the platform of its Commodore family sedan – something that didn’t escape the attention of Bob Lutz. The automotive heavyweight, famed for launching BMW’s M division and shaping icons like the Dodge Viper and Jeep Grand Cherokee when at Chrysler, took the reins as GM’s product chief in 2001 – and one of his first projects was to give Pontiac a true performance renaissance by rebadging some of Holden's hottest products.
