Ghana needs a Defence Minister now – Nitiwul tells Mahama

Former Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has urged President John Mahama to urgently appoint a substantive Minister for Defence to provide strong leadership in addressing emerging security threats across the country.

Following the tragic death of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, President Mahama assigned the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to act as interim Defence Minister.

Since then, the Defence Ministry has been without a substantive head.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament, Nitiwul expressed concern over the continued delay in making a permanent appointment, warning that it could hinder the ministry’s effectiveness.

“The deputy cannot act as the defence minister. That’s why the president asked the finance minister to step in temporarily. But we all know the finance minister has limited time. It’s important that the president appoints someone to take over,” Nitiwul said.

He emphasised that the growing insecurity in the West African sub-region requires decisive and focused leadership at the Ministry of Defence.

“Terrorism is spreading across West Africa. While Ghana remains peaceful, we face constant threats from the instability around us. We need someone who can provide strong leadership,” he noted.

Mr Nitiwul urged President Mahama to act swiftly, either by promoting the current deputy minister or appointing a new substantive minister to ensure stability and continuity in Ghana’s defence leadership.

“This prolonged delay is not helpful,” he cautioned.
