Prof. Kivutha Kibwana is a Kenyan legal scholar, human rights activist, and veteran politician who served as the first Governor of Makueni County from 2013 to 2022.

Having officially retired from active politics after a failed 2022 senatorial bid, he is primarily focused on academia and civil society.

Since September 2024, he has served as a Professor of Law at Daystar University, having previously taught law at the University of Nairobi for over 25 years (1977–2002), where he also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law.

He continues to be a vocal commentator on Kenyan national issues, frequently advocating for constitutionalism, ethical leadership, and human rights.

Early Life and Educational Background

Prof. Kivutha Kibwana was born on June 13, 1954, in Mwanyani village, Nzaui District, Makueni County, into a large family of 29 children, and he often faced food insecurity, sometimes carrying only boiled maize or wild vegetables to school for lunch. 

He attended Nduundune Primary School, beginning his education in a modest two-classroom setup in 1960, then moved to Machakos School for both his O-Level and A-Level studies.

He holds five degrees from prestigious global institutions:

  1. Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Nairobi, done between 1973 and 1976, where he graduated with Upper Second Class Honours.
  2. Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of London, attained between 1976 and 1977.
  3. Master of Laws (LLM) from Harvard University, where he studied International Business and Constitutional Law between 1983 and 1984.
  4. Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) is a step he made at George Washington University between the years 1985–1988, where he specialized in International Human Rights and Comparative Law.
  5. Master of Arts in Theological Studies, which was earned at the Africa International University, and was completed in 2012. 

Kivutha Kibwana’s Career Achievements

Since September 2024, he has served as a Professor of Law at Daystar University.

Governor of Makueni (2013–2022) – he gained national acclaim for his “people-centered” governance, and his administration was widely praised for pioneering public participation models in which citizens directly influenced budget decisions.

He served in various high-level roles in the National Government during President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, including Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Minister for Lands, and Presidential Advisor on Constitutional, Parliamentary, and Youth Affairs, from 2008 to 2012

In the 1990s, Kivutha was a key figure in Kenya’s second Liberation, which led to civil society movements like the National Convention Executive Council (NCEC) that pushed for the 2010 Constitution and the return of multi-party democracy.

Family Background

He is married to Nazi Mwambura Kibwana, a native of the Coastal Mijikenda community.

The couple met in 1973 through a shared passion for drama and theatre during their school years, and they have been together for approximately 47 years, having married when Kibwana was 24.

The couple has children and grandchildren, though they generally maintain their family’s privacy from the public political sphere.

Prof. Kivutha Kibwana’s net worth is not publicly documented, and there is no single definitive current figure.

However, he is widely regarded as one of Kenya’s least wealthy high-profile politicians, who frequently describes himself as not wealthy and living primarily off his academic and public service earnings.

In 2005, as an MP, he publicly listed his assets at approximately Ksh 15.3 million, including a house in Ngong, land in Mbitini, plots at Emali and Vipingo.
