Former Citizen TV Journalist Kimani Mbugua is Dead

Famous journalist Kimani Mbugua has died. Kimani reportedly passed away on the night of October 14, 2025 at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Mental Rescue Centre. The cause of his death is yet to be established.

The former Citizen TV and NTV journalist had been battling mental health challenges over the past few months, which saw him in and out of rehabilitation and hospital care. His untimely death has sent shockwaves among fans, colleagues, and social media users.

Former Nairobi County boss Mike Sonko took to his social media accounts on Wednesday, October 15, to mourn the death of young media personality Kimani Mbugua.

“I am saddened to hear about the premature demise of former Citizen TV and NTV journalist Kimani Mbugua,” he said.

Sonko further stated that he would issue a more detailed statement once the police report is released.

“I will issue a comprehensive statement once the police report is out. In the meantime, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Kimani’s family, friends, and relatives. I pray that God provides them with strength and comfort during this challenging time,” he added.

Struggles with Health Challenges

Kimani Mbugua first opened up about his struggles with mental health back in 2023. He was a rising young talent in Kenyan television, but his promising career was cut short in 2020 after he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

The young media personality later received support and financial assistance from former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and comedian Oga Obinna, who helped him access treatment and rehabilitation.
