IDP permit

To drive abroad, motorists may be required to get an IDP, with different permits available depending on which country they visit and how long they plan to stay for.

Over 140 other countries require IDPs including popular tourist destinations like Australia, Canada, Mexico and Turkey.

Louise Thomas, Confused.com car insurance expert, explained that it's important for drivers to check they have all the relevant requirements for international travelling before they set off.

She said: “As many as five million UK drivers could be driving into Europe this summer. You also have the benefit of being able to take more luggage than if you were to travel by other means, and you can stay in the comfort of your own car.”

Thomas warned drivers to make sure they have a V5C vehicle registration certificate with them while in Europe.

The certificate is the logbook of the vehicle and is issued by the DVLA upon registration in the UK. It is mainly used to provide the details of a vehicle's registered keeper.

The Department for Transport stated that drivers must take their vehicle log book if taking the vehicle abroad for less than 12 months. They also may have to show it if stopped at a port or while driving abroad.

Motorists could also be required to pay import duty on their vehicle if taking it outside the UK. “Check with the authorities in the country you’re taking your vehicle to,” the DfT suggested.

Thomas added: “Driving in a new country can be a bit daunting, but our guide to driving in Europe should cover everything you need to know.

“That way, you shouldn’t meet any bumps along the way. But if in doubt, always speak to your insurer as they will know best what you are and aren’t covered for. And drive safe!”

Drivers will need to ensure they are covered with comprehensive car insurance policies with some countries requiring road users to carry a "green card" as proof of the insurance coverage.

Failure to show a valid green card could see drivers fined £1,000, according to the RAC.

Under current UK insurance rules, motorists are required to have a Green Card if they are towing a caravan or trailer in Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Iran, Israel, Moldova, Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine.
