At least five people have died after a three-storey building collapsed in the Durumi area of Abuja on Saturday.

The structure, which was still under construction, came down near Gudu Market in Area 3, trapping several individuals beneath the rubble.

Emergency responders were able to rescue one person alive after hours of effort. Reports say the survivor had been trapped for more than nine hours before being pulled out.

According to officials, a number of others were also affected, with several currently receiving treatment.

Reacting to the incident, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, directed that all injured victims should receive free medical care.

The Mandate Secretary on Health for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Dolapo Fasawe, was said to have personally attended to the rescued victim before he was taken to the hospital.

In a statement released by Wike’s spokesman, Lere Olayinka, it was confirmed:

“5 brought out dead, 11 recovering and Wike has directed free medical treatment for victims.

“One was rescued alive after being buried in the rubble of a collapsed building for more than 9 hours.”
