Traders at the Suame Post Office Market in the Ashanti Region are reeling from devastating losses after a fierce fire ripped through the market late Tuesday night, destroying over 100 shops and sheds.

The blaze, which reportedly began around midnight, spread rapidly, fueled by exploding gas cylinders stored within the market, reducing property and goods worth millions of cedis to ashes.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as helpless traders watched their life’s work consumed by the flames.

Some nearby residents rushed to assist, forcing open shops to salvage what little they could before the fire intensified.

Traders and witnesses have criticised the response time of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), alleging that firefighters arrived too late to prevent significant damage.

“We called for help early, but the fire service came when most of the market was already gone,” said one distraught eyewitness.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. Preliminary investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, 25 out of 44 permanent shops and 192 sheds were destroyed.

This was confirmed by the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DO II Peter Addai.
