Fifth-Generation Mitsubishi Outlander Set For 2028 Release Date

The fourth-generation Mitsubishi Outlander may be replaced within two years by an all-new model featuring a radical redesign and an improved plug-in hybrid powertrain to boost competitiveness.

The Mitsubishi Outlander remains a pivotal model for the brand, particularly within the United States market. Although sales figures for the previous year reached 35,895 units—a decrease from the 45,253 units sold during the prior period—the vehicle maintains its status as the brand’s best-selling model. Consequently, the replacement of such a key product places significant pressure on Mitsubishi, and it remains to be seen whether the forthcoming iteration will meet these high expectations.

The existing plug-in hybrid variant is equipped with a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, dual electric motors, and a 22.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This configuration generates a combined output of 297 hp and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque while providing an all-electric driving range of up to 66 miles (106 km).

For the fifth-generation model, Mitsubishi is reportedly considering the integration of two additional electric motors, bringing the total to four. Beyond the anticipated increase in output, these motors are expected to be central to Mitsubishi’s next-generation Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system—previously previewed in the Elevance Concept—which aims to enhance vehicle handling through the precise deployment of power to each individual wheel.
