Ex-Super Eagles player questions Chelle’s decision to invite 54 players for AFCON camp

Former Nigerian international Sam Sodje has criticised Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle for inviting 54 players to camp ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Chelle recently unveiled his provisional squad for the 35th AFCON edition in Morocco, where Nigeria will face Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania in Group C as they attempt to mount a strong title challenge.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to begin their training camp in Egypt on December 10 and will play warm-up matches before the tournament kicks off on December 21. With such limited preparation time, Sodje questioned the reasoning behind naming such a large squad.

Speaking to Brila FM, he said, “I don’t really understand the reason for the list, it’s confusing. You call some regular players and new ones but I don’t understand the reason for the 54-man list. Why are you doing that? We have to be positive to see how we can go.”
