Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has spoken out in support of his teammate Joshua Zirkzee after he was booed by fans during the match against Newcastle.

Zirkzee, who was substituted in the 33rd minute, faced criticism from the crowd, with boos followed by cheers as he left the field.

The young forward was visibly upset by the reaction and reportedly became tearful before eventually returning to the bench.

Fernandes, who was unable to play due to suspension, watched the events unfold from the stands.

He expressed his dismay on talkSPORT, stating, “I was in the stands and I’ve never seen something like this.”

He emphasized the importance of support, saying, “And it really frustrates me and annoys me because he’s a player that always gives it his all.”

Highlighting Zirkzee’s adaptation challenges from his previous league, Fernandes added, “As a player that is coming into the team from a different league, he needs time to adapt but, he has huge qualities.”

He criticized the rapid shift in fan perception, noting, “He hasn’t shown all the quality but it can’t be that from the first game of the season everyone was hyping him as one of the best strikers and now everyone does not believe in him anymore.”

“We do believe in him inside the dressing room. I would rather be myself in this position against Newcastle and not seeing one of my team-mates in that position,” the Portuguese added.
