Comrade Philip Shaibu, the deputy governor of Edo State, has taken a swipe at Governor Godwin Obaseki following the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) loss in the recent governorship election.

Shaibu’s criticism comes after a tumultuous period in their relationship, which began when he announced his intention to succeed Obaseki in the 2024 elections

This led to his impeachment in April 2024, but he was reinstated by the Federal High Court, Abuja, on July 17, 2024

Shaibu later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on July 20, 2024.

However, Shaibu mocked his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki saying that they have dealt with him according to how he once told them to do if he turns into a political godfather.

Speaking in an interview with Arise TV about the outcome of the 2024 Edo governorship election, Shaibu expressed satisfaction with the results, which favored the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo backed by Obaseki.

He stated, “I feel vindicated against those who said I couldn’t win elections.”

Shaibu clarified that he doesn’t see Obaseki as an enemy but is pleased that the election result proves Obaseki cannot win without help. He said the outgoing governor has always relied on others to secure victories in previous elections.

The Deputy Governor also mocked Obaseki for not only losing the election but also failing to secure victory for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in his own local government area. Shaibu advised Obaseki to start seeking forgiveness from the people of Edo State.

“I feel vindicated; even the governor couldn’t win his local government. I won my unit, ward, and local government. Where are the governor’s results? He has never won; we always assisted him. What is left now is for him to go back and start begging and apologizing to the people of Edo State, and he has a lot of them that he needs to go and apologize to,” Shaibu said.
