Eddie Murphy Reveals Birth of Granddaughter as His Son and Martin Lawrence’s Daughter Welcome First Child

Eddie Murphy has confirmed that his son, Eric Murphy, and Martin Lawrence’s daughter, Jasmin Lawrence, have welcomed their first child together.

Speaking at his American Film Institute Life Achievement Award ceremony on April 18, Murphy shared the news, saying, “They just had a baby girl. They just had her two weeks ago or a week ago.” The baby has been named Ari Skye.

Reflecting on parenting, Murphy offered a candid take on advice and influence, noting, “Oh you don’t give advice like that… Your kids don’t go by your advice. They watch and see what you do.” He emphasized that children tend to follow example over instruction, adding that he avoids giving too much direct guidance.

The AFI ceremony also featured lighthearted and heartfelt tributes. Martin Lawrence joked about their evolving relationship, saying that after once being turned down for a photo early in his career, “Now I can get all the pictures I want. Because we’re in-laws.” Meanwhile, Dave Chappelle praised Murphy’s influence on his own career, recalling how he studied his stand-up growing up and telling him, “You are still the hero I want to be.”

Murphy himself was visibly moved during the evening as he accepted the honor, surrounded by family and peers. “Seeing all of my family… I’m just really filled up,” he said. “This is a special moment.” He added that the night was unforgettable, saying he felt close to tears and grateful for the celebration of his decades-long career, which also featured tributes from figures like Spike Lee, Chris Rock, Arsenio Hall, Stevie Wonder, and Mike Myers.
