The last prime minister of communist East Germany, Hans Modrow, has died aged 95. 

This was made known by the far-left Die Linke party on Saturday.

According to AFP, a party spokesperson said, “Modrow died overnight.”

Modrow, born in Pomerania - current day Poland- was Prime Minister between November 1989 and April 1990.

Modrow, who was a member of the civil militia(Volksturm) charged with defending the Third Reich during World War II, was sent to the former USSR to serve jail time at the end of the war until 1949.
