A moment of drama ensued on Saturday, September 21, when Mbeere North Member of Parliament Geoffery Ruku’s interrupted a roadside rally convened by activist Morara Kebaso.

The activist was in one of his civic education rallies in Embu Town when the MP’s vehicle approached, diverting the attention of some of the members of the public present. Upon noticing his approaching vehicle, a bold Kebaso started criticizing the MP’s deeds and demeanor.

Kebaso called MP Ruku out over his sponsored bill seeking to limit the freedom of expression through demonstrations.

“Here comes your MP, Geofrey Ruku. What can he tell us. Kenya ni home, we are home. He is the same MP who has proven to be in President Ruto’s praise and worship team,” Kebaso stated while addressing the gathering using the mobile public address system.

At the time, a section of the listeners gathered at the venue joined in forcing the MP to leave the venue. In videos shared from the scene, locals at the gathering were seen dismissing Ruku, asking him to go away.

In other episodes of his engagement in Embu, residents were seen gifting him cash which the activist lauded as signs that campaign financing was evolving.

“I told you we will rewrite the story of campaign financing in Kenya. The people of Embu surprised me with cash gifts. So if anyone was thinking of buying me or bribing me,” he said in a statement.

Morara Kebaso has conducted countrywide tours aimed at sensitizing the citizens on matters affecting them. His focus is on, among other areas, exposing stalled projects that the government has failed to complete in various counties.

The activist has also been educating the masses on the importance of registering as voters and having identity cards as part of preparation measures for electing good leaders.

Besides his zeal and eloquence in the public forums, Kenyans of good will have chipped in to fuel his activism campaigns with donations. A crowdsourcing drive in August 2024, for example, saw him raise money to acquire a Toyota Prado TX and a public address system that would enable him to traverse the country and efficiently engage with crowds in various towns.

In addition, the activist in September announced that a family friend had donated a house to him that would host his office and base for the various activities in his campaign.

But his campaign has not been without challenges as he has had to constantly fight online battles with some social media users doubting him. Key among the contentious aspects of his campaign has been his plea for resources from Kenyans that has seen him labeled a beggar.

In his response, however, Morara Kebaso offered to refund money to those who thought he was after money, adding that he has an established business and family.

The activist who gained fame from his sunroof addresses was also embroiled in a heated exchange with fellow activist Mercy Tarus over the usage of the phrase “Kenya ni How” (Kenya is Home) which Mercy claimed ownership of.
