Don’t charge unapproved fees – Education Minister warns school heads

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has cautioned heads of Senior High Schools who deny admission to students rightfully placed in their schools or demand unapproved fees will face sanctions.

Speaking during the 32nd Annual Conference of Directors of Education, which took place in Sunyani, in the Bono Region, the minister stated that such practices are unacceptable and compromise the government’s commitment to providing equitable access to free and quality education for every Ghanaian child.

He stressed that all students who have been officially placed in schools via the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) must be admitted without any form of discrimination or financial demands beyond the approved fees.

The minister reiterated the ministry’s commitment to uphold discipline, transparency, and fairness within the educational sector, cautioning that any headteacher found guilty will face consequences in accordance with established administrative and legal procedures.

He also urged Directors of Education to enhance monitoring and ensure adherence to the Ministry’s directives to facilitate a smooth enrolment process for all first-year students nationwide.

First-year SHS students began reporting to school last weekend to initiate the 2025-2026 academic year.

This follows their placement into various SHSs and technical institutes through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System.

At the start of the exercise on September 17, 2025, 483,800 candidates were placed into SHSs and technical institutions.

By the end of September, up to 52,492 candidates had opted for self-placement into second-cycle schools under the CSSPS, raising the total number of candidates placed in SHSs and counterpart institutions to 536,292.

Approximately 590,309 qualified candidates out of the 603,328 students who took the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) were eligible for placement into second-cycle institutions.
