  • A dog is being called a hero after helping to save a man’s life.
  • Following an accident, the dog traveled four miles and alerted the man’s family that something was wrong.
  • The crash site was found the following morning and the man was airlifted to a hospital.

An Oregon man is lucky to be alive after his truck left the road, plummeted down an embankment, and ended up in a river. Fortunately for him, dogs truly are man’s best friend.

According to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Brandon Garrett was traveling with his four dogs on a U.S. Forest Service Road when he “failed to negotiate a curve.” This caused him to end up in a precarious position at the bottom of a ravine.

Thankfully, one of Garrett’s dogs walked nearly 4 miles (6.4 km) to his family’s camp site. This alerted them to the situation and they started searching for him.

The crash site was discovered the following morning and Garrett’s brother called authorities for help. As they were trying to make their way to the truck, Garrett yelled out.

Garrett received some initial first aid on the scene, while members of the U.S. Forest Service and Pine Valley Rural Fire District used chainsaws to clear a path for the search and rescue team. They were eventually able to get him in a basket, which was roped to safety. From there, he was airlifted to a hospital by a Life Flight helicopter.

The Sheriff’s Office said that following the crash, Garrett crawled approximately one hundred yards (91 meters) from the truck and spent the night there. His three other dogs were also located at the crash scene and all of them were thankfully alive.
