The Pixel Watch 5 may have just leaked in one of the most unusual ways imaginable, after what appears to be a prototype smartwatch was discovered on the seabed near the Caribbean island of St. Martin.

Gearbox Software founder Randy Pitchford posted the images on X, claiming a friend discovered the device while scuba diving. While prototype leaks often emerge from certification databases or supply chain sources, some surface through the occasional misplaced test unit. However, finding an unreleased smartwatch in the ocean is certainly a new one.

What makes the discovery particularly interesting is that the underside of the device clearly displays the ‘Pixel Watch 5’ branding, and the photos themselves also don’t show any obvious signs of manipulation. It’s worth noting that Google has yet to comment on the images or confirm their authenticity.

Based on the leaked pictures, the watch doesn’t appear to introduce any major design changes. The rounded case, sensor layout and overall aesthetic look very similar to the current Pixel Watch 4, suggesting Google may be focusing on internal upgrades rather than a dramatic redesign this year.

Unfortunately, the images reveal little about the software experience. The watch reportedly has a depleted battery, which limits what it displays on-screen. However, Pitchford claims the device was still displaying the correct time while in a low-power state. This is an impressive feat for a gadget that allegedly spent time underwater before being recovered.

If the device is genuine, it may offer an early glimpse at Google’s next smartwatch ahead of its expected launch in the next few months.

So far, rumours surrounding the Pixel Watch 5 have focused less on design and more on performance. One of the biggest expectations is the arrival of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite platform; Google has previously teased that it will enable improvements in battery life, connectivity, and overall Wear OS performance.

That could also pave the way for more advanced Gemini-powered features on the wrist. However, Google has yet to officially outline its plans for the next Pixel Watch.

For now, the biggest mystery isn’t what the Pixel Watch 5 can do; it’s how an unreleased Google smartwatch apparently ended up at the bottom of the ocean in the first place.
