The Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, has vowed to continue funding the 34 local governments of the state despite the clamour for the implementation of local financial government autonomy in the country.

The Supreme Court had in July 2024, granted full financial autonomy to the nation’s 774 local government councils.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim-led seven-man panel, the apex court had ruled that the councils should manage their funds themselves.

But Governor Radda, while signing the N897.8 billion 2026 Appropriation Bill into law at the Government House on Wednesday, said his administration would continue to fund the state’s local government councils.

He said: “I will say, even the local government councils, they are doing very well. You are aware the state government is funding them appropriately. So now our local governments are fully back with life.

“That is why the volume of people that come to the government house reduces drastically because all the grassroots politicians, it is easier for them to go to their local government chairmen and their councillors for one thing or the other. And we will continue to keep on funding the local governments.”

Although Governor Radda, had in different forums, thrown his weight behind the local government financial autonomy, his Wednesday’s statement apparently shows there is no financial autonomy for Katsina local government councils yet.
