December Pixel Update: Bug Fixes, And Pixel 6 Lives Again

It’s a good day to update your Pixel phone, but when hasn’t it been? Google’s devices have always been known for their unmatched software support, and the latest update is yet another example of the company’s commitment to improvements.

Starting today, Google is rolling out the December 2024 software version for all supported Pixel devices already running Android 15. The Pixel 6 series, in particular, now has five years of OS updates and security updates, cementing its position as one of the top phones. As usual, the update will roll out in phases, so some users will wait a little longer to get the notification.

Google squashes over 20 Android 15 bugs, and Gemini is smarter

Only a day ago, Google rolled out the highly anticipated December Pixel Drop with new Gemini capabilities and other features. You can now have the assistant remember preferences, like you being a vegetarian. 

Also, Gemini Nano now suggests simple replies in the Call Screen for you to respond to unknown callers without answering the call. Plus, you’ll see live transcripts of the conversation.

Today, they’re releasing the necessary monthly security patches to fix any existing issues in the system, audio, Bluetooth, and network performance. It also addresses UI problems and app crashes across the Pixel 6, 7, 8, and 9 series, as well as the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.

One example is the issue where the lockscreen wallpaper fades out slowly, and there’s a delay in call notifications. Another issue is where your display produces a green tint when adjusting brightness, using Netflix, or interacting with other apps. It seemed to have started after the Android 14 update, and rebooting the phone temporarily resolves it.

Pixel 6, 7, and Fold phones receive extended support

The Pixel 6 is at the center of attention in Google’s December update release. It was the first device to feature Google’s custom-built Tensor chip and Android 12, which introduced Material You. Originally, it was supposed to receive three years of software updates, with Android 15 marking the end of its support. 

But Google has decided to extend it with two extra years, making five years of OS and security updates in total. The Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold phones, which also launched with three years of OS support, have also been bumped to five years. Google has edited its Help page to reflect these changes. 

If you were considering upgrading from these models to a newer Pixel during this period of discounts, now you can breathe a sigh of relief. Even though your phone’s hardware hasn’t changed, you’ll still get fresh, useful AI features. With Android 16 already in talks, there’s no pressure to buy a new phone.
