Day 18 — Holiness of Speech

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

Words have great power. They can encourage or discourage, heal or wound, build up or tear down. Because speech reveals the condition of the heart, God is deeply concerned not only with what believers say but also with why they say it.

Paul instructs believers to let “no corrupt communication” proceed from their mouths. Corrupt speech includes words that are harmful, dishonest, unwholesome, divisive, or destructive. Such speech does not reflect the character of Christ or contribute to the growth of His people.

Instead, believers are called to speak words that edify—words that strengthen, encourage, comfort, instruct, and bring life. This does not mean avoiding difficult conversations or refusing to speak the truth. Rather, it means speaking the truth in love, with the goal of helping others grow in Christ.

Holiness of speech begins long before words leave the mouth. Jesus taught that the mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart. Therefore, transformed speech is the fruit of a heart continually being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. As Christ fills the heart, His grace is expressed through the believer’s words.

The Holy Spirit also gives wisdom regarding when to speak and when to remain silent. There are moments to encourage, moments to correct, moments to comfort, and moments to listen. A consecrated tongue is one that is yielded to the Spirit’s direction.

In today’s world, holiness of speech extends beyond spoken words. It includes what believers write, post online, send in messages, and share on social media. Every form of communication should reflect the love, truth, and purity of Christ.

Our words also become a powerful witness to the gospel. Gracious speech demonstrates the transforming work of Christ. When believers consistently speak with kindness, integrity, humility, and wisdom, others see evidence of God’s work within them.

This does not mean believers never make mistakes with their words. When they do, God’s grace invites repentance, forgiveness, and restoration. The Holy Spirit continues His work, teaching believers to increasingly speak as Christ would speak.

Ultimately, holy speech is the overflow of a heart devoted to Jesus.

As Christ rules the heart, His grace will naturally be heard in the believer’s words.

Prayer

Father, let my words bring honor to Christ. Guard my mouth, fill my heart with Your grace, and help me by the Holy Spirit to speak words that build others up. Amen.
