“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”

Devotional:

Every believer begins the Christian life as a spiritual infant. There is nothing wrong with being a spiritual baby at the beginning. The concern arises when growth is neglected and immaturity becomes a settled condition.

Paul addressed the believers in Corinth as “babes in Christ.” Although they belonged to Christ, many of their attitudes and behaviors were still governed by the flesh. Envy, strife, and divisions revealed that they had not yet matured in the way God desired.

This passage teaches an important truth: spiritual maturity is not determined by how long someone has been a believer but by how much the life of Christ is being expressed through them.

Immaturity is seen when believers continue to be controlled by selfish desires, pride, jealousy, unforgiveness, and worldly thinking. These attitudes hinder fellowship with others and limit spiritual fruitfulness.

The good news is that God does not leave His children in immaturity. Through the Holy Spirit, He patiently leads believers toward maturity. As they abide in Christ, renew their minds through God’s Word, and yield to the Spirit, they gradually grow beyond fleshly patterns.

Spiritual maturity is not about appearing important or knowing more than others. It is seen in increasing humility, love, wisdom, self-control, and dependence upon Christ. The mature believer reflects the character of Jesus in everyday life.

Growth also requires a willingness to receive deeper truth. Just as children eventually move from milk to solid food, believers are called to grow in their understanding of God’s Word and apply it faithfully.

Christ-Centered Focus:

This journey is not accomplished by self-effort. The Holy Spirit is the One who transforms believers from within. Our responsibility is to remain teachable, obedient, and continually dependent upon Christ. Rather than becoming discouraged by areas of weakness, believers should see them as opportunities to yield more fully to God’s transforming grace. The Father delights in bringing His children to maturity.

Conclusion:

Ultimately, God’s purpose is that every believer grows beyond spiritual infancy until the life of Christ is clearly seen in them. Maturity is not measured by religious activity but by the increasing likeness of Christ. Keep growing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for patiently growing me. Help me to leave behind every attitude that hinders my growth and to yield daily to the Holy Spirit as Christ is formed in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
