National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has praised the emergence of former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s 2027 presidential candidate. Speaking at the collation and declaration of results in Abuja, Mark said the primary showed that the ADC is committed to democracy, fairness, and internal competition.

He noted that the party deliberately allowed a free contest instead of imposing a candidate. Mark also revealed that he met privately with all three aspirants before the primary, urging them to place the interest of Nigerians above personal ambition.

Key Points:

Mark’s insistence on a “free contest” contrasts with the controversy still trailing the primary, as both Amaechi and Hayatu‑Deen have rejected the results.
The ADC chairman’s claim that the party is not about “a few powerful interests” may be tested if the aggrieved aspirants pursue legal action.
By emphasising that the ADC is a social democratic party focused on people‑centred governance, Mark is trying to position the party as a credible alternative to the APC.
The admission that organising direct primaries across 36 states and the FCT came with difficulties acknowledges logistical challenges but defends the outcome.
Mark’s call for unity is critical; without reconciliation, the ADC risks entering the 2027 election fractured.

Mark must now lead efforts to reconcile the party’s factions. The success of his unity push will determine whether the ADC can mount a serious challenge against the APC and other opposition parties in 2027.
