More Services Charged by Stadiums

When hiring stadiums in Kenya, organisers often pay more than just the base hire fee.

County finance acts and facility policies show a range of additional charges that can apply depending on the type of event, services used and the venue’s rules.

Many counties require a security bond or refundable deposit to cover potential damage or cleanup costs.

Typical amounts range from Ksh10,000 to Ksh100,000 depending on the county and stadium.

If an event charges admission, facilities may take a percentage of the gate collections.

Standard rates are often 20% of gate receipts.

Stadiums may also charge for billboards, signage, sponsorship branding, and advertising space, sometimes billed per square metre or per event.

Fees can range from Ksh 10,000 to Ksh 50,000 or more.

Some venues charge for parking inside the stadium, vendor access, and use of public address systems.

Parking may be set per vehicle or day; e.g., vendor access fees of about Ksh 500 have been implemented at Nyayo Stadium for specific matches.

Additional services such as VIP lounges, hospitality areas, chairs, stalls, and kiosks may incur extra fees at some venues.

Some counties impose separate cleaning charges based on the magnitude of the event, which can influence total costs.

Booking for training sessions, team practice, or youth events is often charged differently and can involve additional hourly or session fees.

In certain counties, using the stadium for filming or live broadcasts incurs additional fixed or per‑day charges.

Total event costs at larger venues can exceed base hire fees significantly, especially when high‑intensity lighting, security, branding, and crowd‑management services are required.

Organizers planning matches or events should consult the specific county finance act or stadium management for a detailed rate card before booking.

Challenges Faced by Kenyan Stadiums

Insufficient funding is a major issue for both national and county-owned stadiums in Kenya.

Maintenance budgets are often too low to cover repairs, turf replacement, or upgrades, and many stadiums operate with minimal staff, leading to neglect of essential maintenance and safety inspections.

Inadequate security infrastructure and personnel in some stadiums pose safety risks for both players and fans. Incidents of hooliganism, theft, or vandalism have been reported in venues with limited fencing, CCTV, or trained security personnel.

Stadiums with poor drainage are often unusable during the rainy season, and waterlogging damages the turf, sidelines matches and increases repair costs.

Facilities like Ruaraka Grounds and Thika Stadium have previously faced such challenges.
