'Cobhams gave me my first big break' - Omawumi reveals

Nigerian singer and songwriter Omawumi Megbele has opened up about how ace music producer Cobhams Asuquo played a defining role in the early stages of her career.

In a recent interview with HipTV, the Bottom Belle crooner recounted meeting Cobhams shortly after her appearance on Idols West Africa, describing the encounter as the beginning of her professional breakthrough. She revealed that Cobhams gave her one of her first major recording opportunities without hesitation, even though neither of them knew what would come out of it.

“Cobhams gave me one of my first opportunities outside Idols West Africa,” Omawumi shared. “He told me to just go with it, and that project ended up becoming a turning point for me.”

According to her, the song they worked on unexpectedly led to her first major endorsement deal, which lasted two years. “I did the song, and then the agency picked it up. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years,” she explained.

The partnership also opened more doors for her, including performing alongside top acts like P-Square at four major concerts across different cities.

Omawumi praised Cobhams’ creativity and mentorship, describing him as a key figure who helped refine her sound and stage presence. “Cobhams taught me a lot about delivery and posture,” she said. “He helped me understand how to express emotion through performance.”

Her reflection shows how Cobhams’ influence went beyond production, shaping her artistry and confidence as a performer. Omawumi’s story serves as an evidence of the power of mentorship and collaboration in Nigeria’s ever-evolving music industry.
