Chelsea 'exploring deal for Liverpool legend' as Blues step up search for Liam Rosenior replacement

Chelsea are currently investigating the possibility of bringing Xabi Alonso to Stamford Bridge as their next permanent manager.

The 44-year-old Spaniard has indicated he would be willing to consider the role, though no final decision has been reached as the west London club continues its search process.

Andoni Iraola presents a compelling alternative option for the Blues hierarchy.

The Bournemouth boss announced last month that he will depart the Vitality Stadium when his contract concludes at the end of the current campaign.

According to The Athletic, both managers feature on Chelsea's shortlist alongside Fulham's Marco Silva as the club seeks a long-term replacement for Liam Rosenior.

Alonso has been without a club since Real Madrid dismissed him on 12 January, with reserve team coach Alvaro Arbeloa stepping into the role.

The Liverpool legend had only completed seven months of a three-year contract after taking over from Carlo Ancelotti during the summer.

His tenure at the Bernabéu began promisingly, with Madrid securing victory in 10 of his opening 11 league fixtures, including a triumph over Barcelona in the Clasico on 24 October.

Yet the club sat four points adrift of their rivals when the decision was made, having also suffered defeat to Hansi Flick's side in the Supercopa de España final.

Prior to joining Madrid, Alonso had delivered remarkable success at Bayer Leverkusen, steering them to a historic first Bundesliga crown in 2023-24 without losing a single domestic match.

The German club also progressed to the Europa League final during his 18-month stint, ultimately falling to Atalanta.

Chelsea's own managerial situation has been turbulent in recent months.

Rosenior was relieved of his duties on 23 April having spent fewer than four months in the position, following his appointment after Enzo Maresca departed in January.

Calum McFarlane has since been overseeing first-team affairs on an interim basis and will continue in that capacity through to the conclusion of the season.

The club's hierarchy is now working to identify a permanent appointment who can provide greater stability at Stamford Bridge following a period of significant upheaval in the dugout.

Alonso brings considerable Premier League experience to any potential appointment, having spent five years with Liverpool between 2004 and 2009.

During that period, he was instrumental in the Reds' memorable Champions League triumph in 2005, before subsequently moving to the Spanish capital where he claimed five further honours including another European title.

Iraola's credentials have been built more recently on English soil.

The Spaniard arrived at Bournemouth from Rayo Vallecano in June 2023, taking charge following Gary O'Neil's departure.

His tenure on the south coast has earned widespread praise for implementing an attacking and entertaining approach that has transformed the club's identity and attracted attention from larger clubs seeking progressive coaching appointments.
