Chelsea complete signing of Argentina star Valentin Barco

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Argentine international Valentin Barco from French club RC Strasbourg, adding another promising young talent to their squad ahead of the new season.

The 22-year-old has signed a long-term contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2033. He is expected to link up with new head coach Xabi Alonso and his teammates during the club’s pre-season preparations as Chelsea continues to strengthen their squad for the 2026/27 campaign.

Barco is regarded as one of Argentina’s most talented young footballers because of his versatility. Although naturally a left-back, he is equally comfortable playing as a central or defensive midfielder, as well as in more advanced roles on the left side of the pitch.

His technical ability, passing range and attacking instincts have earned him praise throughout his career.

He began his football journey with Argentine giants Boca Juniors, progressing through the club’s youth academy before making his senior debut at just 16.

During his time at Boca, he won several domestic honours and established himself as one of the country’s brightest prospects.

In 2024, Barco moved to the English Premier League after signing for Brighton & Hove Albion. Although opportunities were limited, he gained valuable experience through loan spells with Spanish side Sevilla and French club RC Strasbourg.

His move to Strasbourg proved to be a turning point. After making the switch permanent, Barco enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 season, registering 12 goal contributions in 43 appearances across all competitions.

His impressive performances played a key role in helping Strasbourg qualify for European football for the first time in several years.

His club form also earned him a place in Argentina’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, further enhancing his reputation on the international stage.

Barco has already made five appearances for the 2022 world champions and is expected to become an important part of their future plans.
