CHAN 2024: Oyowah delighted after man of the match display in win over Congo

Alex Oyowah could not hide his joy after being named Man of the Match in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Congo at the 2024 African Nations Championship.

Goals from Anas Yusuf and Sikiru Alimi sealed the win for Eric Chelle’s side in their final group game on Tuesday night.

Handed his first start of the competition, the 20-year-old impressed and was rewarded with the individual accolade.

“I feel very proud to have been named Man of the Match in our match against Congo,” Oyowah told CAFonline. “This is like two opportunities, one for me and one for Nigeria. This is my first match and our last in the group, and we were able to win.”

Despite Nigeria’s early elimination, Oyowah and his teammates refused to bow out quietly, motivated by national pride.

“We did not want to lose the match despite the elimination,” he added. “I think the Nigerians feel proud after our victory over Congo. We had nothing to lose. We did not want to lower our heads in this match.

“The most important thing is that we got the three points in our last match and achieved our first victory in this tournament.
