New Canadian poll just hit the auto industry like a rogue Tim Hortons drive-thru line:

15% of Canadians say they’d consider a Chinese-made EV. (Yes, the same ones everyone keeps threatening to tariff into oblivion.)

Breakdown:

  • Young buyers leading the charge: “I want tech, I want cheap, I want it yesterday.”
  • Older folks: “I’ll stick with my Ford… even if it costs more than my first house.”
  • Everyone else: “Why is the BYD Seagull $22k in China and somehow $55k if it ever makes it here? Make it make sense.”

Translation: Canadians looked at the price tags from Detroit, Stuttgart, and Yokohama… then looked at BYD, NIO, and XPeng dropping feature-packed EVs for half the money… and quietly whispered: “Sorry legacy brands, but my wallet is speaking Mandarin now.”

Meanwhile traditional automakers: “We heard you want affordable EVs.” Also them: releases $68,000 crossover with heated cupholders

The poll is basically Canada politely raising one eyebrow and saying: “If you won’t build a $30k EV, someone else will… and we might not wait for the tariffs to decide.”
