The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly supported the ongoing peace talks aimed at resolving the violence affecting the Middle Belt, particularly in Plateau, Benue, and Gombe states.

The association condemned the ongoing attacks, which have led to significant suffering and loss among the affected communities. CAN’s president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, reiterated the association’s commitment to advocating for the safety, security, and dignity of those affected.

He emphasised that CAN will persist in its quest for justice and lasting peace for these communities.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Okoh also called for nationwide support for peace efforts and warned against actions that could escalate the situation further.

He urged Nigerians, regardless of their faith, ethnicity, or profession, to back peace initiatives and refrain from actions that might destabilize the nation.

He also stressed the importance of dialogue and collaboration with various stakeholders to foster understanding and resolve conflicts peacefully.

“We urge Nigerians from all walks of life, backgrounds, and faiths to support ongoing peace initiatives and refrain from actions that could undermine efforts to address the country’s security challenges, particularly in the Middle Belt region. Engagements with stakeholders across professional, ethnic, and religious lines are recognised diplomatic practices that foster dialogue and mutual understanding. Any actions or statements that heighten tensions risk destabilising our nation, and we therefore call for the utmost caution,” the CAN President stated.

Furthermore, Okoh highlighted CAN’s advocacy and humanitarian outreach, including their recent visits to violence-stricken communities in Plateau State.

These visits involved distributing palliative aid and offering comfort to survivors, with plans for continued assistance in the future. He also warned against the spread of fake news, which he said could worsen tensions and divisions in the country.

In conclusion, CAN’s president called for unity, mutual trust, and the involvement of religious and community leaders in bringing an end to the bloodshed, stressing that peace in Nigeria could only be achieved through collective efforts and collaboration.
