BREAKING: Victory For Fubara As Lawmakers Dump Impeachment Plot

The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially retracted the impeachment notice issued against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The lawmakers conveyed this decision on the floor of the house, citing respect for the President as the primary reason for the withdrawal.

The move comes after a session held by approximately twenty-six lawmakers aligned with former Governor Nyesom Wike at the House of Assembly Complex on Wednesday morning. Notably, the withdrawal of the impeachment notice follows a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu on Monday between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

The underlying tension in the state has been attributed to a power struggle between Governor Fubara and Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. This power struggle resulted in a division within the House of Assembly, with 27 lawmakers defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The discord led to parallel legislative sessions, an unsuccessful attempt to impeach the governor, and even the demolition of the Assembly complex.

The meeting on Monday at the Aso Villa was attended by both Governor Fubara and Minister Wike. In the presence of President Tinubu and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, both parties committed to withdrawing all court cases, among other concessions.

The lawmakers had initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara on October 30, 2023, less than 24 hours after an attack on the House of Assembly complex.
