  • The new setup no longer requires users to interact with predefined voice commands.

Whether you like it or not, modern cars are now about much more than getting from point A to point B. In recent years, they’ve become technological powerhouses on wheels and are now more intelligent and more connected than ever before. This year, one of BMW’s most important new models will launch with an advanced new AI assistant using Amazon’s AI Alexa+ architecture.

BMW has announced that the second-generation iX3 will receive an updated version of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant later this year in Germany and the US. The carmaker says the updated system will allow the iX3 to become “an intelligent companion” for its users.

In-car voice assistants are nothing new, but BMW’s updated system is quite intriguing. No longer will users need to interact with the system using predefined voice commands, and instead, requests and queries can be linked together just like they would in a normal human conversation. Additionally, users can easily ask follow-up questions about the vehicle’s features and a slew of general knowledge topics.

BMW’s updated Intelligent Personal Assistant uses a generative AI model that understands language and formulates its own responses. Attendees at this month’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will be able to experience the system first-hand, before it is launched in the second half of this year.

The system can also be linked to a user’s Amazon accounts, providing easy access to different types of content, including music and news.

“Our partnership with Amazon is based on a shared vision of technological excellence,” BMW Group’s senior vice president of development Digital Services, Stephan Durach said. “This has resulted in a product that sets new standards in the naturalness of human-vehicle interaction through the use of artificial intelligence. With the addition of Amazon’s Alexa+ technology to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the vehicle becomes an intelligent companion for its users.”
