Last night the 7th British Academy Film Awards took place in London, and the big winner of the night was papal drama “Conclave”. Edward Berger‘s film took home four awards on the night, including Best Film, British Film, Adapted Screenplay and Editing. This intensifies an already unpredictable award season that has largely seen the spoils shared amongst the various award bodies.

This trend continued here with no film dominating proceedings like “Oppenheimer” or Berger’s own “All Quiet on the Western Front” have in recent years, with no film receiving more than four statuettes. Tied with “Conclave” for most awards on the night was fellow Oscar rival “The Brutalist”, which was awarded in Score, Cinematography, Direction and Lead Actor for Adrien Brody.

The biggest surprises of the night revolved around Sean Baker‘s “Anora”, which has established itself as the season’s frontrunner in recent weeks with big wins at Critics Choice, DGA and PGA. The comedy-drama surprisingly lost in Original Screenplay to Jesse Eisenberg‘s “A Real Pain”, which added to the fact that “The Substance” won the award at the Critics Choice, opens up the race in the category. However, “Anora” itself celebrated an unexpected win in Lead Actress, where star Mikey Madison beat out award season sweeper Demi Moore, proving she is not out of the race just yet.
