Apple is shifting gears in its augmented reality (AR) strategy. According to Bloomberg, the company is accelerating work on Apple smart glasses while halting plans for a lighter version of the Vision Pro headset. This move positions Apple directly against Meta, which has been making waves with its Ray-Ban smart glasses lineup.

Two Versions in the Works

Apple is reportedly developing at least two types of smart glasses:

  • Non-display version: Expected to be unveiled next year with a 2027 release date.
  • Display version: Initially planned for 2028 but now being pushed forward. This model could directly compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban Display glasses.

Both versions are expected to feature built-in speakers, cameras, and multiple styles, with heavy reliance on voice interaction and artificial intelligence (AI). Apple is also working on a dedicated chip to power the glasses.

Competing with Meta’s Head Start

Meta already has a strong presence in the smart glasses market. Its recently announced lineup includes:

  • The second-gen Ray-Ban Meta glasses with better battery life (available now).
  • A new Oakley-branded version for athletes launching this month.
  • The Ray-Ban Display glasses, praised by reviewers for their impressive design and functionality.

With these offerings already in consumers’ hands, Apple will be entering the race later—but with the brand power and ecosystem advantage to shake things up.

Vision Pro Plans Shift

Meanwhile, Apple has paused development of a lighter Vision Pro headset that was rumored for a 2027 launch. The company has reassigned resources from that project to focus on its smart glasses. While production of the original Vision Pro has reportedly been scaled back, filings suggest a “modest refresh” could still arrive by the end of this year.

What This Means for Apple Users

If Apple’s accelerated plans go smoothly, consumers could see Apple smart glasses as early as 2027. By prioritizing wearable AR over a lighter Vision Pro, Apple seems intent on creating a more accessible, everyday device—potentially making smart glasses the next big product in its lineup.
