It was also the first time the 27-year-old has played under Thomas Tuchel.

Alexander-Arnold was the ninth right-back used during Tuchel’s short tenure so far and came in with something of a point to prove.

He did just that by providing an assist for Gordon in the 2-0 win over Czech Republic on Tuesday night.

Speaking to ITV after the game, the Barcelona forward said: “I make that run time and time again and only a certain number of players have got that ability, technique and bravery to be willing to make the mistake trying that pass, so credit to Trent.

“That’s why he’s so good and I’ve been dying to play with him for that reason.”

He continued: “He’s had his own journey with England.

“Probably should’ve played… Would’ve liked to have played more than he has, sorry, but he’s been a great character during this camp, I’ve really enjoyed being around him.”

Thomas Tuchel’s reaction

Three Lions boss Tuchel told talkSPORT that he was happy with Alexander-Arnold’s performance on the night.

He said: “In the first half, I think he struggled a little bit with the position. We wanted a little bit more offensive actions, a bit more dynamic movements that he’s used to from his characteristics.

“Second half, we put him a little bit deeper and had one change with Eberechi Eze for Myles Lewis-Skelly.

“We got in itself a bit more offensive [position] and that allowed Trent to be in a bit of a deeper position, which suits him more because he’s strong on the ball and can deliver from half-field.

“This is exactly what he did, a half-field cross after a mistake from the opponent on point and Anthony had a beautiful goal.”

Alexander-Arnold himself was pleased to be back in the England fold after two years away.

He said: “It was amazing. It’s always an honour to represent my country. It’s been a long time, but I’ve always believed I can play for England.

“That belief has always been there and it was about proving it at club level.

“The manager gave me a chance, now hopefully he is happy with how I played.”

England face Croatia on Saturday, before travelling back home to play Czech Republic at Wembley next Tuesday.
